Kirby jumped off the dock and swam about 100 yards to meet us on the boat. His speed and stamina were amazing. We didn’t even call him to come to us. Doxies are such loyal dogs.

Penny and Maggie are not only sisters, they are best friends!
I wasn’t out looking for costumes for the boys, but the costumes just found me. Every year I procrastinate, and the sizes I need are all gone in the costumes I want. So, yesterday I bought Halloween costumes for Patrick and Gary … even though it is only August.
Patrick is a lobster, and Gary is a hot dog – cliche, I know. Patrick loves his costume. Gary does not. It was hard to get pictures of Gary because he was running away from me and rubbing against couches and tables to get the costume off.
At one point, the lobster tried to eat the hot dog. Funny.
There must be a strange lunar alignment or something because over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten two separate e-mails looking for homes for wiener dogs.
One from a friend who’s mother-in-law is moving and can’t take her 2-year-old with her, and the other from Patrick’s (my youngest son) breeder looking for a home for a 10-week-old chocolate and tan (pictured below).
I can’t stand the thought of these babies going to the pound. My love of Doxies is telling me to give one of them a home, but are three wieners too much? We live in a pretty small townhouse.
If you have any insight on a three-doxie-household or if you know of any one that wants to welcome one of these dogs into their homes, please let me know.
Meet my new brother Kirby.
My mom lives in Arkansas and went to her local pound. Believe it or not, there was a dachshund there that had been locked up since March! Who puts a doxie in the pound, and how is it possible for one to stay for nearly six months?
As you can see why from his picture, he melted my mom’s heart and she took him home. She now has five dogs, but Kirby is her only wiener (the others are two labs and two chihuahuas).
She says his tongue is too long for his mouth so it is always hanging out. Other things she describes about him remind me so much about my doxies, it is amazing. Kirby likes to cuddle, lick, is very protective, burrows under, has a strong hunting instinct and a wonderful disposition.
I am headed to visit my mom over Labor Day weekend and I can’t wait to meet Kirby! Welcome to the family.
Being that we have no human children, our wiener dogs are treated like grandchildren by our respective parents. My mom came to town this weekend for a visit and she couldn’t wait to see her “grandwienies.” We took them to the beach, mom gave them both baths, and of course, cradled them like babies. Too fun. Here are some photos.
If you live in San Diego or surrounding areas, don’t miss the San Diego Dachshund Club’s summertime picnic.
There are lots of good wiener-watching opportunities and it is a great place to make some new friends. See you there!
