There is a lot of misinformation out there about Queen Victoria and her many dogs, but the story that her husband Prince Albert brought Dachshunds with him from Germany when he married certainly seems plausible. The chubby wiener dog in this photo is variously identified as “Waldie” and “Boy.” If you know more, please let the Dachshund News know. We’re always interested in royal canine history.

Oasis star Gallagher defends Dachshunds against extinction

On a recent trip to Germany, Liam Gallagher, star of the former band Oasis and the face of dog charity for Pup Aid, must have heard about Dachshunds’ less-than-bright in that Country.

Gallagher and his girlfriend Nicole Appleton have a Dachshund, or sausage dog as they call them across the pond, and, according to the Sun newspaper, he said he would crusade for their cause.

He ranted: “Extinction of sausage dogs? I will prevent that! When I’m back in England I am gonna buy 900 of them. I am gonna prevent them from downfall.”

That’s a lot of poo bags on Primrose Hill. Liam might be showing his caring side with canines but the love doesn’t extend as far as his own flesh and blood.

Liam also says he and his feuding brother aren’t going to be putting Oasis back together any time soon.

Baron the Dachshund and his coach yuck it up with Jay Leno

The Orange County Register has an obituary for Baron:

He was one of his town’s most famous canine residents, an undefeated racer who had been nicknamed “the Muhammad Ali of wiener racing.”

Baron, a brown, standard dachshund who made numerous television appearances during his racing career – including two on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” – died at home last week.

He was just a month shy of his 18th birthday, or as his owner Rob Rowland likes to point out, 125 in dog years.

Even with winning the 1997 Wiener Nationals, 1998 Champion of Champions, and 1999 Ultimate Challenge at the Los Alamitos Race Course, Rowland said he will remember his dog’s greatest accomplishment as being a wonderful pet and companion.

Visit the website Rowland set up for Baron to see videos of the speedy wiener in action both on the track and on the Tonight Show back in 1997. Baron was also featured in the dogumentary, Wiener Takes All.

The Hamptons Grind spotted broadcaster and ex-Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos with his two faithful dogs — Daisy the Dachshund and Charlie the terrier mix — outside Starbucks.

It seems Daisy is used to paparazzi and other attention, having appeared on Good Morning America where she also did the sports prediction thing.

Australian PGA player Jason Day doesn’t leave his miniature Dachshund pups, Lola and Charlie, at home when he’s on the road. Nor does he have an entourage to take care of them in a private jet. According to BigPond Sport, “Day and wife Ellie were stuck in the back row of a cramped 57-seat regional jet, their two dachshunds travelling as carry-on in bags under the seat.”

Nor was that the end of the travel problems Day experienced at the PGA Golf Championship at Whistling Straits. Saturday morning, while getting ready to head off to the course, Tiger Woods showed up on the TV, warming up on the range.

Day knew he was on the same score as Woods, which meant he would be teeing off about the same time.

Understandably, he panicked.

“We weren’t thinking,” he admitted. “I was in bed watching the golf and all of a sudden I see Tiger.

“I was crapping myself. Ellie was crapping herself even more.”

A few minutes later, Day was giving his Mercedes tournament courtesy car a good workout and in the end made his tee time easily, arriving at the course with 45 minutes to spare.

After shooting a bogey-free 66 to pull within four strokes of the lead, Day was more concerned with his two Dachshunds, Lola and Charlie.

“I’ve left the puppies there for at least eight hours by themselves,” he said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a big smell and some stains.”

Designer Kamali’s wiener dog has a blog

Fashion designer Norma Kamali, who’s credited with making sweats fashionable (is that a good thing?) is also a Dachshund owner and technology lover. Given all that, it’s not all that surprising to discover that her wiener dog Zeke has his own blog. A piebald from Louisiana, Zeke is super cute but we’re wondering if his use of all caps is to compensate for his size.
