Our Dachshund rescue can use some help this holiday season or most any season. If you have any used dog collars and leashes, dog toys, coats and sweaters, blankets, or most anything doggy related then we are running short with donations dropping off in recent years. New and used is always fine. We do take care packages if you are downsizing your spoiled dogs collection of unused toys or leashes, etc. I like to send toys with all adoptable dogs and my toy box is now empty! ARRGGH! The dog toys need not be new, but not in pieces please. If you have some extra items then we can use them or get them to other dog rescuers in this area who can use help too. This is a puppy mill boy we rescued this year, Hero, in this photo. He was a challenge to get through to him, but Hero has turned into a cuddle bug with his new family. Hero is just one of 86 “recycled wieners” that we have already placed this year and counting, a new record!

Midwest Dachshund Rescue, which rescues and rehomes Dachshunds in Southern Wisconsin, Northwest Indiana and the Chicagoland area, is holding a holiday raffle for a handmade Dachshund ornament Christmas tree.  All proceeds go directly to help the more than 200 Dachshunds rescued each year receive quality veterinary care.

Hi everyone, my name is Barkley, and I am a 10-year-old Standard Dachshund available for adoption at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

I came all the way here from a shelter in Mississippi, and I had some health problems when I arrived. I had an infection in both ears, skin dermatitis, and some of my teeth were in pretty bad shape; but the wonderful people here knew I deserved a second chance, so I was treated for all of my health problems!

I am currently on medicine for my ears, and I had a dental procedure performed where they polished up all of my teeth!

I am now looking for my forever home with people who will look past my age, and see that inside, I am still a young pup at heart! I like to hang out with people, and I never meet a stranger!

The good part about adopting an older dog is that I am past the puppy stage, and I won’t chew up your furniture! Give me a warm lap, or a plush little dog bed, and I am good to go!

Please come and visit me today! I so deserve that second chance at finding my forever home, so please find room in your heart for a special little dog! I hope that you come and visit me soon!

Dumped by the roadside in Seattle, Bella the Dachshund now accompanies her author/owner on book tours and gets to stay at the Ritz, which seems just like home to the little wiener dog:

But now we know for sure that Bella was an apartment dog in a multi-story building. I’ve been with dogs, more specifically with two golden retrievers and a half German shepherd/half Irish wolfhound, the first time THEY met an elevator (at the Holiday Inn in Sacramento.) They went NUTS. It was a very memorable ride. Bella, looking as if she owned the place, marched across the lobby of the Ritz on her leash, stopped in front of what looked like a wall, waited until it opened, got on, turned around, waited for the wall to open again, and got off. As our grandson would say, “Easy Peasy.”) No drama.

Oh, and by the way, yesterday the concierge from the hotel showed up at our door with some tiny Milk-Bones and a pink and gray doggy coat for guess who!!

The Daily Doxie has another huge Dachshund rescue to report, this one in Fort Dodge, Iowa where a breeder agreed to relinquish 15 of the 45 puppies he had living “free range” on his property, said executive director Laurie Hagey of the Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa.

The 12 females and three male puppies are almost all younger than a year old, and in “surprisingly good shape,” she told the local Messenger newspaper.

“One little female is deaf,” she said. “We think one may be blind in one eye, and one has an injured leg. A couple of them have tooth abscesses. But, all in all, they seem pretty healthy. … All would make wonderful family companions – with a lot of love, patience and consistent training.”

Some of the New Hampshire Rescue Dachshunds

On Friday, September 17, the New Hampshire SPCA Field Services Division assisted Police in seizing Twenty-Nine Purebred Dachshunds and one Pomeranian from a home in Deerfield, NH. The dogs were living in their own filth in an overcrowded residence.

“Some of the dogs were living in an outbuilding in the back yard,” said Steve Sprowl, Field Services Manager for the New Hampshire SPCA. “The rest were loose inside the home. The whole place was covered with animal waste and fleas.” The owner, George Ditson of Deerfield has been charged with fifteen counts of animal cruelty. All 30 dogs have been voluntarily surrendered.

Upon arrival at the NHSPCA, the dogs were examined and were found to be infested with fleas and were treated for flea bites and parasites. They required a deep cleaning and were severely under-socialized. Two of them had visible wounds from being bitten by the other dogs. Of the thirty, there were two litters of puppies and one adult female that has since given birth to only one surviving puppy. They have received heartworm testing which was negative and rabies and distemper shots. Some of them have now been spayed or neutered and microchipped and will be ready for adoption as early as today.

“One of the challenges with these dogs will be their lack of socialization,” said Jen Corbin, Director of Animal Services at the NHSPCA. “They are shy and will need adopters who will spend time with them to help overcome their timidity. But they have already improved so much in the short time that they’ve been here.”

Potential adopters are advised that while the dogs have been found to be generally good natured, due to their lack of leash manners, under-socialization and shyness, they would not be recommended to be in a home with small children. In addition, the dogs, which range in age twelve weeks to four years old, will be behaviorally more like adopting a puppy. They will need to be housebroken and trained to interact appropriately with their new family. We suspect that they would benefit from living with another socially confident, stable dog.

The agency currently has over 70 dogs and literally hundreds of cats in our care. Adopters are encouraged to come in and check out all of the available animals.

The New Hampshire SPCA is asking the community for their support in caring for these and other rescued animals. Individuals and companies wishing to help with the food, supplies, medical treatment, etc. can make a tax deductible contribution to the NHSPCA. These four rescue doxies were the puppies of a pregnant Dachshund taken in by CTDR just a few days befoe she gave birth. Caring for pregnant mothers and newborns is very time intensive for Central Texas Dachshund Rescue volunteers. Pregnant rescues need even more love and nurturing to make them feel safe and secure, many for the first time in their lives. Thanks to CTDR all the pups from this litter were happy, healthy, and were all adopted into great forever families.
