A problem at our hosting company took the Dachshund News out of commission Thursday and Friday, but we’ve gotten the all-clear. No dire warnings will appear when you try to visit the site.

A reader writes:

Have you found any boots that will stay on your dachshunds feet? I recently moved to Greenland with my dachshund and I can’t seem to keep her boots on her feet and after a few minutes the cold icy conditions make her feet hurt. Any advice?

I’ve never succeeded in getting my dog to wear boots despite the fact that she’s bothered by salt, so let’s hope readers have some recommendations.

I see a lot of dogs wearing the “balloon boots” shown above lately, but I know other dog owners don’t like them as when they come off and get left behind at the park, some dogs gobble them up.

Here are more boot solutions including Musher’s Paste, which I have indeed tested with somewhat mixed results. I just couldn’t be sure it was helping although others swear by it. And I’m in Canada so we give these things a good test drive.

After his wiener dog ate the living room carpet, Doug Speirs was inspired to reach out to others with ill-behaved dogs. In a recent column for the Winnipeg Free Press, he writes:

Well, bad dog owners, here’s your big chance. What I want you to do is sit down at your computers right now (“Sit! Sit! Good owner!”) and, in as concise a manner as possible, tell me all about your dog’s bad behaviour. Feel free to email a picture, too.

Just to be clear, what we are talking about here is amusing anecdotes wherein your beloved pet has driven you to the brink of insanity, as opposed to actual criminal canine behaviour or terrorist activity. For example:

RIGHT — “We laughed and laughed when our chihuahua Fang ate the TV remote control and we had to watch the Weather Network for two straight weeks until the cod liver oil finally did the trick.”

WRONG — “We are thinking about hiring a lawyer due to the fact our postman has not been the same ever since our Bernese mountain dog ate most of his internal organs.”

Doug doesn’t say anything about being a Winnipeg or Manitoba resident to qualify for his contest, but given the prizes on offer, he might not get too many entries from outside the Peg.

I will subject the entries to an intense judging process in which I will read all of them to the guys in our business section who sit in the cubicles behind me. Then I will select my THREE favourites — which I’ll publish in an upcoming column — and award the three winners tickets to a cool concert or show, along with copies of my colleague Randy Turner’s awesome new book Back in the Bigs, which details Winnipeg’s journey back to the NHL.

WJHG in Florida reports on a Fort Walton Beach woman says she’s alive because of her wiener dog. The 10-year-old dachshund, who had been rescued from a shelter himeslf, returned the favour last weekend.

On a related subject, here’s a report on the difficulties rescuers can face when the dogs they’re dealing with dogs who — like Rudy the Dachshund — have been abused.

Let’s be honest. Knitting does not happen a lot here at the world editorial headquarters of the Dachshund News so we were a bit surprised, to say the least, at how many of our readers bought this book: Knit Your Own Dog: Easy-to-Follow Patterns for 25 Pedigree Pooches. When we looked inside, however, we immediately saw the appeal. The dogs are fantastic including the Afghan Hound, the Scottish Terrier, and needless to say the Dachshund.

As the editorial staff of the Doxie News was seeking out stories to bring you, we came across this tale of Felix, an older Dachshund, passed from father to daughter.

In a way, I think that’s why we bonded, Felix and I. We had something truly unique in common: We’d both survived the Victor Ozaist style of child rearing – tossed into the ocean, with absolutely no warning. (That’s how I learned to swim, too, and how both Felix and I ended up absolutely terrified of water as “kids.”)

Halfway through his puppyhood, my father whisked Felix across the country with him. When I went to visit them in Arizona around Christmastime, Felix came flying down the dusty, ochre-colored road toward me with a look on his face of “Get me the hell out of here!”

Happily, and as is often not the case with Tributes at the Dachshund News, Felix is still alive and living out his golden years in Brooklyn close to Prospect Park.
