No this is not the National Enquirer. It really happened to Lilly the Dachshund in South Africa:

“The giant python’s body was already curled around my dog, four times. Lilly’s head was inside its jaws, and the reptile was starting to swallow her,” said Elske.

After fighting off the snake, giving some mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and taking the injured pup for emergency veterinary care, Elske was rewarded when Lilly fully recovered and gave birth to six pups.

Greyhound rescuers pose nude

by AnnB on December 18, 2007 · 0 comments

in Whimsical Dachshunds

These days, you’re nobody if you haven’t done a naked calendar so it’s not all that surprising that greyhound rescuers doffed their clothes to produce a 2008 calendar, the proceeds of which will go to support Greyhound rescue. You can order a calendar and see more photos of nude women with dogs here.

Dachshund rescuers, what do you think? Maybe next year? In the mean time, we’ll continue our Dachshunds-with-scantily-clad-humans series by offering up this peek of Jane, the comic heroine who, along with Fritz the Dachshund, “kept British soldiers smiling through their gloomiest hours.”

For Christmas and New Year’s, the Daily Dachshund and Dog News recommends a simple bowtie or collar and tie. Here are some photos of dogs with neckwear if you need convincing. If you send us your Doxie-in-bowtie or Doxie-in-formal-attire photos, we’ll feature them later this week.

You can order dog ties here among other places. Just do a search either on Google or EBay or head out to your nearest pet store.

The Daily Dachshund and Dog News admits that a lot of so-called dog art leaves us cold. These satirical Dachshund paintings by Earl Wettstein are, however, the exception. They’d make a great Christmas present for the Doxie lover in your live although we suspect a fairly expensive one.

Three employees discuss a great pertk, being allowed to bring your dog to work.

Caveat: the dogs must be well behaved.

There’s a war brewing over piebald Dachshunds and a petition circulating to get the AKC to accept piebalds as part of the Dachshund standard. The Save the Piebalds site has all the background you could ever want including a discussion of the health issues.

Whatever happens, we think there should also be a campaign to photograph piebald Dachshunds on non-patterned, non psychedelic backgrounds. Much as we love these photos, they make us feel like we’ve downed 10 expressos.

So we’ve provided a little visual piebald calm:

Who invited the dog?

A New York Times special investigative report:

Difficult guests are no longer limited to humans. The boundaries between humans and animals have been so eaten away by pet therapists, pet designer outfits and pet bar mitzvahs, that it has reached a point where devoted owners, who treat their animals as privileged children, lose all perspective on the pet’s role in their social lives.

More American households have pets than ever — 68.7 million of them in 2006, according to a new survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association, up 12.4 percent from 2001.

And you thought it was only Scottish Terriers at the White House. Don’t forget about Honey the Dachshund.
