Needless to say, exercise is a factor in getting and keeping weight off dogs. The great outdoors is always the best option but if you live in a snowy, cold clime with a dachshund who gets sore paws in winter, you might want to consider a workout on the treadmill. Small Dogs Paradise has a great three-part series on dogs and treadmills.

Part 1 – Is dog treadmill a must-have?
Part 2 – Dos and Don’ts of exercising your dogs on the treadmill
Part 3 – A step-by-step exercising guide

Looks like Emily (above) could stand to take a few treadmill lessons alongside Conrad, a dachshund puppy, getting introduced to good exercise habits.

Meanwhile, another young Doxie just picks it up on her own, performing solo treadmill mounts and dismounts. Bravo!

January 1. It’s the time of year when gyms fill up and half the office goes low-carb. But what if it’s not the human in the family but rather the dog who needs to trim down? Well, here are some diet and exercise tips for fat dachshunds starting with an unbelievable pair of before and after shots from Dachshund Rescue NW.

Formerly fat Francis should be an inspiration to us all and, according Rescue NW, we need it. Their website notes: “We are getting in way too many obese and overly fat Dachshunds to our rescue. Then we have to help them drop all the weight before they going to their new homes and it takes several months to have them drop the excess weight safely by cutting the food intake slowly and adding exercise. And we are still seeing way too many fat Dachshunds around town so it was time to let people know how to feed their dogs and tell if your dog is too fat.”

The website
has an ideal weight chart and a guide to how much to feed your Dachshund. More information on dealing with overweight dogs can be found here.

We promise to continue the 2007 tradition of featuring shirtless men and Dachshunds. And we’re also going to try and find more topless women with Dachshunds. To see an enlarged version of this naked woman with a Dachshund, click here.

New Year’s resolutions for dogs

by AnnB on January 1, 2008 · 1 comment

22 New Year’s resolution for dogs. If the Daily Dachshund and Dog News had to pick just one that we would like to see kept, it would definitely be number 11.

If anyone’s going to keep their New Year’s resolutions, it would be this Doxie and his owner. Or else…

May you plunge right into 2008 just like this little diving Dachshund — and enjoy it as much as he does.

Fritz and Frieda: two Dachshunds with traditional German names

Fritz and Frieda: Traditional names and a traditional wedding for these two Dachshunds

Bride and groom, originally uploaded by jacksonpe.

Updated September 2011: Readers have added almost 100 more wiener dog names. Just scroll down to the comments to see them all. Whether you’re looking for something Germanic and traditional or more offbeat — like Brat, short for Bratwurst — we’ve got all sorts of suggestions.

Petfinder.com, the largest online database of adoptable pets, announced earlier this month the 2007 Top 10 Pet Names for dogs. They were gathered from Petfinder.com’s more than 11,000 animal shelters and rescue group members. But because not just any name is suitable for your Dachshund puppy, we’ve also added out own favourite wiener dog names below.

Petfinder.com popular dog names

1. Buddy 2. Max 3. Sadie 4. Jack 5. Daisy 6. Lucy 7. Lady 8. Charlie 9. Rocky 10. Duke

Almost 10 years ago, the Canadian Dachshund site, WienerDogs.org, did a survey of Doxie owners and found Oscar to be the most popular Dachshund name. If you want something Germanic influenced and didn’t find anything to your taste in the selection above, here’s a complete list of German names. The Daily Dachshund and Dog News especially likes Frieda for girls and Sigmund for boys. We’re also partial to Fritz, which is as classic as Oscar although less cerebral. And as the wedding photo above demonstrates, timeless names and traditions just never go out of style.

If you’re looking for a name because you’re about to get a puppy, be sure to visit our section on Dachshund puppies, which tells you how to find a happy, healthy wiener puppy (standard or mini) and bring it up right.

A field of seven dachshunds raced on a 56-foot track for the title of the fastest wiener dog in the southwestern United States. The winner was named “Sammy Davis.” He and his owner, from San Francisco, got to ride in the fast-food company’s float.

The Daily Dachshund is working on getting photos and video from the race. In the mean time, we bring you a fun photo of another wiener dog race.

Photographer Chris Taylor notes: “Wearing a Harley Davidson hat, Petey, in the green bandana sprints ahead of Doc in the yellow bandana as spectators watch in the background at the 2005 Wiener dog race at Emerald Downs horse race track in Auburn, Wash., Friday. Both Petey and Doc made it to the third and final heat, but did not place in the top two.” Oh well, it’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game — or so we’ve been told.

Unfortunately this is not a cheery holiday story:

TARPON SPRINGS, Florida – A 16-year-old Tarpon Springs boy has been charged in one home invasion and has emerged as a suspect in two other crimes – another home invasion in which a 92-year-old man was toppled from his wheelchair and a burglary in which a dachshund’s throat was slit, police and victims say.

This is probably the last of the 2007 Dachshund Christmas photos but the Daily Doxie is going out with a bang, encouraging you to head over to Flickr and check out all the great photos of the- one-and-only Doxieone. There’s lots of great non-Christmas stuff too.
